Millie Martin
Therapeutic Counsellor
Hello my name is Millie, an experienced and qualified therapeutic counsellor. I’m here to help you with emotional challenges you may be experiencing at the moment. I am open minded and it is important to me that you feel comfortable and relaxed enough to share your feelings with me. We can work together to explore what will help you feel better and move forward on your healing journey.

Millie Martin Therapist
Our therapeutic relationship can help you to discover your own, innate resources to stimulate the changes you want to make in your life, even if you’re not quite certain what those changes might be to start with – we can work that out together.
People come to counselling for many reasons and I welcome you whether you are experiencing anxiety, depression, effects of trauma, relationship difficulties, addictions, low self-esteem, loss, stress, uncertainty, anger… whatever you are worried about.
Human Givens Approach:
The Human Givens approach is a set of organising ideas that provides a holistic, scientific framework for understanding the way that individuals work. This framework encompasses the latest scientific understanding from neurobiology and psychology. At the core of Human Givens Psychotherapy is a highly empowering idea – that human beings have innate resources to help us meet our fundamental needs.
Humans come into the world with certain basic needs, such as the need for love, security, connection to others, control and self-esteem which arises from feeling competent in different areas of our lives. However, we also have innate resources, our own ‘internal guidance system’ to help us meet these needs. These resources include memory, imagination, problem solving abilities, self-awareness and the ability to form relationships with others. It is when emotional needs are not met, or when resources are not used correctly that we suffer distress.
Working within the Human Givens framework enables us to see where a person’s life is not working well. It focuses on helping clients to identify where emotional needs are not being met and empowers them to meet those needs by activating their own natural resources in new ways. Each session is tailor made for the client and uses a combination of highly effective psychological interventions, including brief solution focused therapy, relaxation and guided imagery. Human Givens also utilises a wide range of other techniques and suggests practical help where appropriate.

What you can expect from a session?
The initial session includes an assessment of needs as well as therapeutic input and may last up to one hour 15 minutes. Each subsequent session will be 60 minute long.
No two individuals are the same, so sessions are client-led and tailor-made to the individual’s specific needs.
How many sessions will I need?
My aim is to help you to start feeling better, in as few sessions as possible. The number of sessions required will vary according to the complexity of the individual’s needs. However, most clients require between four and eight sessions and generally report some improvement after just one.
How often do the sessions take place?
Where do the sessions take place?
All sessions take place either at my practice in Wotton-Under-Edge, your home {if in a 15 mile radius of W-U-E}, on the telephone or remotely via Skype, Teams, or WhatsApp.
